Can Hypnotherapy Help Relieve Migraine Headache Pain?

With hundreds of millions of headache sufferers all over the world it’s easy to understand why there are so many different headache remedies. The most common approach to relieving headaches, and other types of pain as well, is to pop a few pain pills. However, there are thousands of other approaches that also give pain relief without the side effects or other health problems that are commonly associated with drugs. One such approach is hypnotherapy.

Research has shown that hypnosis can be effective in relieving migraine headache pain as well as other types of headache. Hypnosis can be performed by a professional hypnotist or by yourself. If you use hypnotherapy yourself it is also called self hypnosis.

In most cases, hypnosis is used after other treatment approaches have failed. It is not usually a headache sufferer’s first choice because most people are after a quick fix. They want to take the easiest approach which is generally consuming pain pills. However, pain pills do not always work as intended. In fact, painkillers can sometimes cause more serious health problems than the actual headache itself.

Painkillers can be dangerous for some people and can also be addictive. Research has shown that a great percentage of chronic headache sufferers actually experience an increase in the intensity of their headaches from taking medications. It is usually much safer using natural approaches to relieve a migraine headache, and natural treatment methods will often give better results as well.

Some natural treatment options will relieve pain more quickly than others and will also be easier to implement. The reason more people do not try hypnosis is probably because of three main reasons. First, they think they have to go to a hypnotist which is just too much trouble, too much money, and too time consuming. Second, they think hypnotherapy won’t relieve pain very quickly and they’re after is fast pain relief. And third, they like the idea of self hypnosis, but it sounds it might be too hard to understand or require too much effort.

Sure, it’s true that self hypnosis may take a little while to learn, but it’s actually very easy. And once learned it’s as simple as finding a nice quiet place to lie down where you can think about things that will relax you and relieve your pain. It’s a lot like meditation and can actually be done almost anywhere.

It’s usually best to lie down, but as long as you can find a quiet place to sit, you can perform self hypnosis anywhere. Once learned, it can also be used to prevent migraine headaches. If you can recognize pre-migraine symptoms, which most migraine headache sufferers experience, you can get started using hypnotherapy before the headache appears, which can help you prevent it from ever developing in the first place.
