Self-talk is the non-ending messages you send to yourself in your mind. These messages can influence the way you perceive things. In any situation, the messages you give yourself are determined by your perceptions based on your past experience. Self-talk can be positive or negative. Positive self-talk creates a healthy frame of mind. It gives you motivation and positive energy to enable you to succeed in whatever you are doing. Negative self-talk, on the other hand, creates negative emotions and cause a lot of stress. Sometimes, the negative messages about ourselves and the situation we are in can become so powerful that they block the positive messages completely.
Negative self-talk can hinder us from taking appropriate actions to improve a situation and create more problems. It prevents us from overcoming stress. Reprogramming your self-talk can help you shift your perspective of the situation. If you find that you tend to practise negative self-talk, it is important that you can try to change the negative messages to positive ones. This would enable you to overcome stressful situations. It would benefit you greatly if you make it a habit to practise positive self-talk.
Stress can be caused by unrealistic beliefs you have of yourself or certain aspects of life. You should assess your beliefs, identify those that are unrealistic and try to change them. Many of the unrealistic beliefs we have at the present moment are formed from childhood experiences. Thus, it is important that when you identify these unrealistic beliefs you have in your mind, try to recall where and who they come from. You should assess these unrealistic beliefs and challenge their validity. Unrealistic beliefs need to be changed as they can cause tremendous stress in your life.
We can relieve stress by eliminating distorted thinking that cause us to see things in a negative way. We should also try to refrain from exaggerating the description a situation by using extreme words such as “awful”, “terrible” or “disastrous”. By not judging, criticizing and demoralizing others, we can avoid creating resentment, frustration and anger. These negative emotions can create much stress. Also, try not to blame yourself for bad situations that arise which you are not entirely responsible.
The above are some things you can do to help you change your perceptions and relieve stress. As described above, you can change the way you think about yourself and a situation. We can use positive self-talk, change unrealistic beliefs and eliminate distorted thinking to help us create a healthy self-image as well as develop a right perspective of a situation.
