Does Looking Up at What You Are Trying to Memorize Make It Stick in Your Long-term Memory?

I was told that looking up at what you are trying to memorize instead of looking at it straight on causes it to travel to the back of your brain, where your long-term memory is located. Is this an old wives' tale, or is there some scientific reason for this?

Suggestion:

There are two hemispheres of the human brain, and one (left) is where you store long-term memories. It may easily be that looking something up, which takes imagination to seek out the info (right-brain) may help put the info into the left brain. I find looking things up helps me remember.
