Explaining to and Teaching Your Child How to Read

Most would say teaching a child how to read isn’t all that difficult. The norm is to start off with teaching them the alphabet, and then explaining how each letter sounds.

Over time, your child understands it better and improves his or her reading skills. The first two steps are the most important elements when it comes to reading though, and you must teach your child how to master them before they can reach their full potential.

You don’t want reading to seem like a chore for your child though. It’s a great idea to get them involved in the world of books at a young age in a creative and fun way. There are so many different options to do so, and it can really make them enjoy reading and eventually writing too.

You should also try to have fun while teaching your child how to read. You need to seem interested and ultimately like you enjoy reading yourself – this will make your child think it’s worth doing. Your child will also love the attention and treatment he receives from you.

By reading to your child while he or she is an infant, it will lay the structure for the skills they require to read effectively. Your voice will be a tool for them, an instrument teaching them how to read effectively and how to pronounce consonants, intonation, and rhythm. It should be a positive and fun experience to participate in.

Another great idea is to ask your child at a young age which color or object it is when you point at something. This will build their reading comprehension.

As your child’s language skills continue to progress, it would be a fantastic idea to implement a few other questions. For example, using “w” words such as why or what can provide different conversations and help your child understand and recognize what they are reading.

Introduce your child to many different genres and books; just always make sure you keep their interest in mind. This will ensure it is not only an enjoyable experience for your child, but also for you.
