Not all chocolate is good: most of the stuff you buy at the aforementioned supermarket or candy store probably has more goodness in the wrapper than it’s contents! They contain yucky things like refined sugars, milk fats and hydrogenated oils that we should avoid like the plague.

So what sort of chocolate should you eat? True cocoa is the best. Not only will it satisfy your sweet tooth, but it will also provide health aspects beyond what many of us thought possible. The recommendation is to eat two small squares of chocolate per day. Remember, we’re not talking about a typical candy bar here. Dark chocolate contains higher levels of cocoa and lower level of milk and sugar.

The chocolate should contain at least 70% cocoa. This can be found specifically in dark chocolates. A tip worth remembering is that a good chocolate should only have a few ingredients listed on the contents label.

So why is choccy good for us?

1. Chocolate has vitamins that are important for our bodies to function properly. It’s been discovered that it has components of Vitamins A, B1, C, D and E

2. Chocolate contains minerals such as potassium, calcium and iron.

3. It can be a great help in reducing the risk of heart disease because high blood pressure is reduced. This is due to the flavonoids in cocoa, which is a basic ingredient of chocolate. The flavonoids help by keeping body fats from blocking the arteries.

4. These flavonoids also contain antioxidants that have been known to reduce the risk of cancer. These antioxidants get to work in your body by hunting down free radicals which are molecules that are blamed for many heart related illnesses. Antioxidants destroy these free radicals.

5. Chocolate has nitric oxide that helps in blood pressure maintenance and heart sustenance.

6. There have been findings that chocolate brings about blood thinning, similar to the effects of a small dosage of aspirin. This is a factor in keeping the free flow of blood in the system and lessens the development of clotting.

Eating a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables is a great way to get sufficient antioxidants. Now, eating chocolate can be advised as well!
