The difference between children and adults when it comes to learning is that children absorb stimuli like a sponge. This is because they accept each stimulus as it is, never having to question its validity or sensibility unless you tell them that doing so is the point of the whole exercise. Children also tend to focus better once you catch their interest or get their attention. Adults always seem to have a lot of things going in their minds that their attention tends to wander off from one thing to the next.
The thing is we all have the ability to learn and do a lot more; we only have to concentrate and set our minds into it. In fact, this conclusion is supported by the research conducted in practically every discipline or study wherein a variety of techniques for enhancing the learning ability of children and adults are being looked into. Some of these techniques are: meditation, use of drawing or direct visualization, rhythmic breathing, singing, storytelling, dancing, music and relaxation.
Psychologists have also found out that developing a person’s concentration enables that person to tap into his or her inner strength and to take cognizance of “abilities” instead of focusing on what his environment is feeding his senses.
When you turn your attention towards your inner self, you find it easier to understand your problems because you know that the answer to these problems lie within you.
An example would be when you feel you have forgotten something at home as you rush out of the door to work. What happens is your mind goes on auto-pilot due to the “regularity” of the things you do everyday that it no longer focuses on the details as it tries to run through the whole sequence of your routine. Once you settle down and focus or pay attention to all the events that has happened prior to you going out the door, you suddenly realize that you didn’t forget anything after all.
That’s the thing with our subconscious mind, it just continues to keep a record of everything whether you are “consciously” aware of it or not. When you find a need to cull into that repository of events, you just need to get your mind to pay closer attention to the details that you were previously not attentive to.
