If you do not have these things you will most likely never learn to speed read properly.

When you are learning to speed read there are many different techniques that are used. You can learn to speed read by using the skimming technique. When people are speed reading they are using their peripheral vision to see a large area of words and skim the page. Many people use this skill when they are speed reading and it contributes to their speed. When you read in this manner you are not looking at each word and reading it. You are skimming the page and taking in large groups of words at once. This method takes in the most important words and disregards the rest as non essentials. This is a good technique to use when you have to read large amounts of information. However, if you are reading something that requires a high attention to detail, you might not want to use this particular technique. Because not every word is taken in, many people believe that this method does not work well at absorbing information. However, there have been studies undertaken which show that speed readers who use this technique have improved reading comprehension. This is even true when confronted with in depth and difficult material.

You can use the technique of reading the first sentence in each paragraph. With this method the speed reader will only read the first sentence of each paragraph. This will ensure that they have the main idea of what the paragraph is about. They will then go on to skim the rest of the paragraph. This process is continued throughout the entire text until finished. This method seems to work reasonably well. The speed reader will get the main idea and then take in enough information to understand the text. However, this method assumes that when reading there is always only one idea in each paragraph. This is not always the case. For this reason this technique is not recommended for some texts.
