At its most basic, meditation helps by getting us to be still long enough to calm down. Once we are calm, we often can think more clearly, gain a healthier perspective on whatever we were worried about and see potential solutions we were too anxious to see before.
Guided imagery and healing visualization offer a way to bypass the normal roadblocks that keep people from accessing the parts of themselves that most need healing.
Everyday Worries
Over time, people who meditate often find that they don’t become as anxious or tense in the first place and that they don’t react as strongly to stress. And they become more aware of when they are becoming stressed out or anxious and can intervene before it takes over.
Trauma
People who have experienced trauma often have post-traumatic stress and anxiety. There are initial reactions and then, long-term issues may set in over time. One way that the anxiety and stress can manifest is in nightmares.
While I have not worked specifically with trauma-based nightmares, I did create a meditation for my son and he hasn’t had a nightmare since. He was having bad dreams, some of which he remembered and could tell me about and some that just woke him up with no recollection of the dream he had just had.
I created a guided imagery based on the ones he remembered and it seems to have worked.
“Many people in need of healing, whether physical or emotional, manage to intuitively come up with their own homegrown imagery for help in their recovery. Some are able to consciously construct these images. For others, the process is more like a magical visitation. Images bubble up to the surface of their awareness, seemingly of their own accord.” -Belleruth Naparstek, Invisible Heroes: Survivors of Trauma and How They Heal
Long-Standing Issues
Those of us who are hand analysts look at the life lessons we can see in your hands. These are the issues you came here to overcome or heal.
Many of them are fear-based and would be helped by guided imagery focused specifically on the issue. Some examples are fear of rejection and disapproval, fear of intimacy/trust issues and hiding out (due to fear of rejection).
How to Get Started
Start with 5 minutes of deep breathing and staring out of the window while you imagine something that brings you peace. Sounds way too simple and indeed, there are lots more complicated procedures for learning to meditate, but if you’re like me, you’ll avoid them precisely because they seem so complicated!
Once you get used to the idea and practice of brief meditation, add more time. Consider experimenting with guided imagery tapes or CDs or mp3s.
