Nlp – the Meta Model

The Meta Model in Neuro Linguistic Programming, is a model of language, a model of questions that are used to specify information about someones experience. It is used to get clarity and exactly find out how someone is creating their experience and/or limiting themselves.

This model was developed when Richard Bandler and John Grinder studied the linguistic structures of some of the world’s most effective therapists. In stead of leaving their success down to intuition, Bandler and Grinder sought the explicitly explain how these therapists were able to produce change in people when others were not.

They studied Virgina Satir, Greagory Bateson and Fritz Perls and noticed that their language patterns shared certain qualities. Effective therapist were able to meet the client in their model of reality and then bring them out of it – instead of insisting that the client should come to believe what the therapist believed.

The meta model asks questions to find out quality and specific information. It is based on the assumption that all communication contains Deletions, Distortions and Generalisations.

Deletions in language are when information has been left out. For example if someone says “I’m Anxious” – you want to figure out how they know they are not happy or when they know it’s time to be anxious. Distortions would be things like mind reading, “he doesn’t like me”, would be an example. You are distorting reality and making up what you think is going on. Generalisations are when people say things like, “Nobody loves me”. Generalising that no one in the world loves you. Communication is ripe with deletions, distortions and generalisations and the Meta Model was developed to reconnect the client back to the experience so that they can get a fully idea of what else was going on. So that they can challenge their beliefs and the model of the world.

The Meta Model is used to break down those 3 different communication elements and give the therapist a way of meeting the client in their world and building a bridge for them out. It is used to both break down bad beliefs and build a more useful perspective of their world.
