That means that every 10 minutes you spend reading, you’ll get 100 words ahead of everyone else. Think about what a difference that will make after a while of use! Even the tiniest bit of increase will have a significant effect on your overall reading ability!
It’s very easy to use, so I’m sure you’ll have no trouble adding it to your “arsenal” of high-comprehension speed-reading reading tricks. Here we go…
Try using a highlighter and marking out important pieces of the text as you work through it. Don’t slow down as you’re doing this — almost use the highlighter as a guide for when you’re reading, and then lightly press down on it as you get to important parts. Just highlight one or two phrases per paragraph, that’s all. You’ll find that this little addition to your reading will improve your comprehension significantly.
Another way of thinking about it is that you should highlight the 10 most important percent of the material. It’s usually the case that the real “factual” part accounts for approximately 10% of the material. If you want to narrow it down further, then the factual part that you’ve never read before probably only accounts for 5% of the material. The rest is just there for re-capping old material, and re-explaining the facts in extra detail. That extra text may help you understand how it’s all relevant to the material as a whole, and you obviously still need to read and understand the whole text, but the simple act of highlighting the most important 10% will give you a huge boost to your comprehension overall.
And, of course, the higher your comprehension, the higher your reading speed will reach. This is because the more familiar you are with the text, the faster you’ll be able to go through it and comprehend it all. So if you follow this quick step – highlight the text while you read – your rate will jump by approximately 10wpm right away.
