Increasing the number of pages you cover in a set period of time won’t do you much good if you don’t understand the content you just breezed through. And a high level of comprehension when you’re moving at a snail’s pace won’t help you complete even a fraction of all the reading you would like to.
There’s no doubt that you are capable of increasing both your reading speed and level of comprehension and that’s the purpose of this article.
Here are 4 simple tips to help you read faster and understand what you’ve just read better:
1. Start fresh. If the mind is cluttered with multiple thoughts, worries and concerns, you’re not in the right place for accelerated reading and comprehension. Clear your mind first by taking a few deep breaths, meditating, or basic exercise. Each can be effective in creating a calm and relaxed state of mind – essential for peak reading comprehension.
2. Read in chunks. Before you begin, take a good look at the material you wish to read and consider reading it in sections. If it’s a book, do one chapter or one section at a time.
3. Immediately create a key point summary. The most efficient way to do this is with a mind map. A mind map is a non-linear way of capturing key elements of a section visually on a single page, aiding your understanding of the material. Keep your summary to one page per section/chapter.
4. When the book is complete, gather your summary pages or mind maps. If the volume is 10 chapters, you might have 10 separate mind maps or summary sheets. If the book or course is divided into sections or phases, you may choose to do a single summary or mind map for each. Either way, you will have captured the essential information quickly and you’ll have an instant reference guide to help you recall the most important details at will.
Speed reading and comprehension go hand in hand. It’s always more effective to speed read a chunk of content and then capture the most significant ideas and elements. It’s by far the best way to gain a solid grip of any new material.
