If I take my personal example then many of my activities depend on the reading speed. For example writing my blog, online courses, or communicating through e-mail. Besides it, I run two companies, of which one is an investment and insurance broker company and the second one is selling health products. If I were slower reader it would take more time to keep an eye on these businesses.
Actually if I had not taken up speed reading I would probably not have become an entrepreneur. Some years ago I was focused only to academic career, and it promised be a safe job and stable income. And I did not believe that I was capable of achieving more. I had always known that I am not the type of a businessman and until recent I was satisfied with it.
But when I became capable of reading faster than normal people do then it gave me a huge boost in self-confidence. From that point on, the academic life seemed to be too slow and unproductive. I wanted for more. Then I started teaching speed reading classes and I did all the marketing on my own I saw that I was able to do business on my own. Soon I started other business projects.
Being able to speed read has changed my attitude. Now I am able to consume information at fast pace, which allows for fast decision making. In business there is less time for making decisions than in academic life. At the same time I started to receive more and more information. I think that the number of emails I receive has tripled over the last two years. And I have to read more all kinds of documents. If my reading speed were slower then it would be difficult to cope with that kind of information flow.
Due to my business activities I use more internet resources such as websites, blogs or company resources. I have to know what is happening in the market and what my competitors are doing.
If you want to be successful in business then you have to educate yourself all the time. There is no other possibility for keeping up with the fast changing world. And again it means that you have to read a lot. If you are a beginner in the field of business then you have to read even more. For example, although I had been teaching classes in economics for many years, my knowledge in management and marketing was not so great and I had to make it up. You have to deal with your weaknesses and a businessman has to be an all-rounder.
But reading texts will not earn money directly for me. And if I spend the whole day on reading then I will not have time for other activities. Therefore reading fast will clear time for other tasks, which will generate your income. If I were slow in reading then I would probably have to work 14 hours a day and still not be able to get things done. It would be very stressful and will result in burnout sooner or later. But being a fast reader helps me to avoid that kind of trouble.
